February 9, 2010, Chicago, IL - Sunkist Growers and JEWEL-OSCO’s Chicago area retail stores joined forces in January to help the hungry through a “Sharing is Caring” promotion. At the end of the month-long program, $7,500.00 was donated to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
Sunkist provided special display units of Cara Cara oranges and with every 3 lb. bag customers purchased, 25¢ is donated to the food bank. One quarter of JEWEL-OSCO’s stores also offered Cara Cara sampling and a take home recipe booklet to further educate consumers about this wonderful variety.
“We were honored to have the opportunity to work with Sunkist on a program that benefits our community by helping to feed the hungry while at the same time offering our customers an excellent quality product,” said Ken Cruikshank, JEWEL-OSCO’s Produce Sales Manager.
Sunkist® Cara Caras are known as the “Power Oranges®.” Research by the Sunkist Nutrition Bureau has found a wealth of nutritional advantages packaged in this delicious piece of citrus. Cara Cara Power Oranges are a special variety of juicy, low acid, seedless navels packed with more natural nutrition and minerals to power a healthy immune system. Sunkist Cara Caras are at their peak this time of year.
The bright orange exterior covers a deep, rich pink pulp, which is extremely sweet, and the fruit has few to no seeds. Cara Caras are an excellent source of vitamin C, A and fiber, a good source of folate and potassium, and a natural source of Lycopene, a health-promoting antioxidant known to neutralize harmful free radicals.
“This was a great promotion for everyone involved,” said Lance McMillan, Sunkist’s Director of National Account Sales. “It directly benefits the people who need help the most during these hard economic times. And JEWEL-OSCO customers can feel good about their contribution to helping those in need in their community.”
Newspaper advertisements and in-store header cards about the program illustrated the commitment that Sunkist and JEWEL-OSCO have to helping families and communities in time of need. Information was also available on the Sunkist Facebook fan page and Twitter outreach.
