Surgeon at Beaumont, Grosse Pointe Performs Hospital's 1st Robotic Surgery

Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe now has a state-of-the-art da Vinci

®

Surgical System. Dinesh Telang, M.D., chief of Surgery at Beaumont, Grosse Pointe recently performed a radical prostatectomy -- the hospital's first surgery using the da Vinci.

"The da Vinci Surgical System combines the knowledge and skills of the surgeon with precise manipulation of surgical instruments," says Dr. Telang. "This technology has transformed surgical treatment for prostate cancer because of the technical and clinical advantages in terms of visual magnification and refinement of surgical techniques in an area that can be difficult to operate with traditional techniques."

Surgeons operate the da Vinci Surgical System while seated comfortably at a console while viewing a 3-D image of the surgical field. The surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the 3-D image with hands and wrists naturally positioned relative to his eyes. The system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.

Many technically challenging surgical procedures performed today using standard laparoscopic technique (minimally invasive surgery in which a camera and surgical instruments are inserted through a small incision) may be performed more easily and with better technique using the da Vinci Surgical System. This is possible because it increases clinical precision while maintaining much of the "look and feel" of open surgery. The da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons to perform more complex procedures through incisions as small as a button on a man's shirt.

By enhancing surgical precision, the da Vinci Surgical System has improved clinical outcomes and redefined standards of care in terms of surgery for prostate cancer, for example. Reduced trauma to the body; reduced blood loss and need for transfusions; less post-operative pain and discomfort; shorter hospital stay; faster recovery and return to normal daily activities are all benefits the patient may experience when compared to traditional "open" surgery.

The purchase of the da Vinci robot was made possible entirely from philanthropic contributions and events (such as the annual golf outing) and loyal supporters of the hospital.

It is the second such site for a surgical robot in the organization. Royal Oak is a multi-specialty training center for robotic surgery and has used at least one form of da Vinci robot since 2002 for lung, urologic, gynecologic and heart surgeries.

Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe is a 289-bed hospital located in the heart of Grosse Pointe. Founded in 1945 by the Sisters of Bon Secours, it was purchased by Beaumont Hospitals in October 2007, making Beaumont a three-hospital regional health care provider. Beaumont, Grosse Pointe provides medical, surgical, emergency, pediatric and critical care services.
