LEXINGTON

, Ky.

, Tuesday, September 20 — A sustainable model is

paramount for a

state-run health information exchange (HIE) to

flourish, according to

the latest issue brief, “Sustainable Success: State CIOs and Health Information Exchange,” released today by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). The report is available for download on NASCIO’s website at

www.nascio.org/publications

.

NASCIO, a leading advocate for technology policy at all levels of government, found that state CIOs and policy officials play varying roles in developing health information exchanges. Since 2010, the number of public health information exchanges has nearly doubled, but looming questions around HIE sustainability still exist.

NASCIO believe it is imperative that the state CIO provide sound leadership and advanced ideas for the development of a self-sufficient HIE. The issue brief focuses on the unprecedented opportunity for states to set-up and run a health information exchange. Included are best practices for creating potential revenue streams, considerations for systems development, and innovative options that may reduce maintenance and lower costs.

“There are substantial federal incentives for public and private organizations to develop interoperable health information exchanges, but what is going to set a successful HIE apart is the ability to provide innovative services with minimal costs,” said Doug Robinson, NASCIO executive director. “State CIOs recognize there is no better time than now for carrying out these goals, but continued ingenuity will be vital to ensure a state-run HIE is independently sustainable and fully operational.”
