Tatung University and Alcatel-Lucent launch the first WiMAX campus network in Taiwan
Taipei, April 21, 2008
–Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris andNYSE: ALU) and Tatung University today announced the launch of Taiwan’s firstWiMAX 16e campus network to foster research and innovations in wirelessbroadband technologies. The University’s Center of WiMAX Wireless BroadbandTechnology features Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced, world-leading WiMAX solutions.Tatung University’s community of professors and students (more than 4000people) can utilize the new WiMAX 16e network to delve deeper into wirelesstechnology research, while WiMAX developers can also benefit from TatungUniversity’s research outcome for compatible hardware and innovative software.Alcatel-Lucent today signed a memorandum of cooperation with Tatung Universityto strengthen the telecommunication research and development of innovativeWiMAX application by coordinating resources from both parties, marking it animportant milestone in the WiMAX industry in Taiwan.
Tatung University’s WiMAX 16e experimental network is supported by theTatung InfoComm, a WiMAX operator in Taiwan with the aim of buildinginnovative, professional and trustworthy WiMAX products. Leveraging on WiMAX’sadvantages of high bandwidth, large capacity, and low latencies, TatungUniversity’s experimental network provides “ubiquitous,” “always-on” servicefrom base stations, indoor and outdoor CPEs, PCMCIA/Express cards, USB donglesto laptops with built-in WiMAX capabilities and other devices. In the future,user behaviour information and usage data will be analyzed and available toWiMAX developers to further improve and develop newer and appealing WiMAXservices.
Tatung University and Alcatel-Lucent are also demonstrating WiMAXtechnology’s maturity through various innovative, state-of-the-art WiMAXapplication services, including smart metering, digital video surveillancesystems, IPTV, PS3 gaming , IMS, and high-speed video streaming. Theseinnovative applications show that WiMAX technology can make every day life moreconvenient and hassle-free.
“Before deploying WiMAX application services in the commercial market, fieldtesting and evaluation are crucial. Tatung University’s network not only provesWiMAX’s capabilities in real life but also provides a wealth of data as well asan R&D environment for WiMAX developers and research institutes,” said C.Y.Hsu, the leader of Tatung University’s Wireless Broadband Laboratory. “TheWiMAX industry will no doubt continue to broaden its presence in our dailylives to meet people’s needs.”
Alcatel-Lucent is a leading player in the wireless infrastructure market andthe commercial leader in WiMAX Rev-e, with 14 networks in service out of its 35commercial references worldwide.
