Telstra today announced it has secured a Facilities Based Operator (FBO) licence in Singapore. The new licence, awarded by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) takes effect on 15 December and enables Telstra to own and operate telecommunications infrastructure such as voice and data networks, systems and facilities in the country.
Being responsible for services delivered on its now wholly-owned infrastructure, Telstra will have greater control over the customer experience and network architecture, ensuring optimal performance, multi-level resiliency and reliability. It will also enable Telstra to build the local backbone required to support its plans for new cable submarine capacity to Singapore.Customers with global operations, including those in Singapore, can expect to experience better network performance, more complete monitoring and single point accountability for services delivered by Telstra.
Mr Richard Duggan, Head of South Asia for Telstra International, said Singapore is a crucial component of Telstra’s growth plans in Asia. Securing the licence allows Telstra International to further realise synergies and leverage assets gained following the Reach restructure and marks another key milestone in realising Telstra’s goal to be Asian specialists with world leading services.
“Telstra International operates one of the largest and most diverse networks in Asia Pacific. Increasingly, enterprise and wholesale customers are specifying a blend of international and domestic services. Receiving the Singapore FBO Licence, will help us meet our customers’ evolving needs and offer greater flexibility in the markets they are operating in and equally in the new markets they are planning for,” Mr Duggan said.
“Singapore is an important hub on the international business stage. For multinational customers based here or those looking to expand into the region, local support for their IT and communication requirements is critical. With Telstra as their single network and services partner, customers can have visibility of the services they have commissioned, with greater cost efficiencies and comprehensive local service support when required,” he added.
The announcement follows Telstra’s recent award of three new licences in India to provide customers with international and national long-distance telecommunications and ISP services under its joint venture with Microland, Telstra Telecommunications Private Limited (TTPL).
