Hong Kong – 20 March 2013: Telstra has entered into a non-binding MOU with submarine cable group SubPartners, whereby it would prospectively acquire one of the direct Perth-Singapore fibre pairs of the APX West submarine cable.

Construction of the new APX West submarine cable is expected to begin by the middle of 2013 and is scheduled for completion in late 2014. When it is completed the new cable will span 4,600 kilometres between Perth and Singapore. The new cable will incorporate four optic fibre pairs providing two-way data transmission, each fibre pair having an initial design capacity of eight terabits per second.

Martijn Blanken, Managing Director of Telstra Global said, “Our commitment to developing the APX West cable is in line with our long-term strategic plan to grow further and deepen our Asia Pacific network capability in the region. This new cable will supply the high speed, low latency infrastructure that is increasingly needed by enterprises and carriers, who are looking for greater resilience and redundancies for connectivity between Southeast Asia and the West coast of Australia. The APX West submarine cable is particularly instrumental in meeting the growing data transmission needs of multinational enterprises that are looking to expand their business across the Asia Pacific region. Telstra is dedicated to ensuring our customers have access to superior products and services they’ve come to expect from us.”

Bevan Slattery, CEO of SubPartners said, “SubPartners are very excited about our announcement with Telstra today. We have been working closely with Telstra and are committed to providing reliable, flexible and independent cable system which ultimately led to their decision to prospectively invest in APX West with SubPartners.”
