DALLAS

, Texas, January 22, 2010– The Texas Employee Confidence Index dipped 1.9 points to 52.6 in December, according to the latest Spherion®Employment Report. The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive®on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reveals a slight decline in confidence. In the latest report, Texas workers reveal doubt in the strength of the economy and job availability. Despite these concerns, more workers expressed confidence in the future of their current employers and in their personal job security.

Results from the Texas Employment Report:

  • More workers believe the economy is getting weaker, with 42 percent reporting that they believe so. This represents a 13 percentage-point increase from November.

  • Sixty-five percent of workers believe there are fewer jobs available, representing a 13 percentage point increase from the previous month.

  • Nearly three-fourths (74 percent) of workers are confident in the future of their current employer. This is a 10 percentage point increase from November.

  • In December, 80 percent of workers believe it is not likely they will lose their jobs versus 72 percent of workers believing so the previous month.

“Over the last six months or so, our Employee Confidence Index has fluctuated. While workers are hesitant about the overall health of the economy and job market, it is promising to see that they are maintaining high levels of confidence in their own personal employment situations,” said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. “With no clear way of determining a timetable for the economic turnaround, it is likely we will see uncertainty among workers continue in the months to come.”
