Timmons Group Awarded a Virginia Offshore Wind Power Development Research Project

Richmond, VA – March 28, 2014  – Timmons Group is pleased to announce that it was one of four firms selected for a research project funded by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME).  Governor Terry McAuliffe made the announcement on March 26, 2014 that four proposals were selected under a request for proposals that generated 20 responses for projects requesting a total of $4.83 million in DMME funding and which offered a total of $5.83 million in matching funds.  The awards total $860,000 for research having a total value of more than $3 million.

The results from the research and development activities conducted through these project awards will help lower costs and risks for commercial offshore wind power development on the Outer Continental Shelf off the coast of Virginia. 

The Timmons Group team has developed a comprehensive approach to advance the current state-of-the-science in metocean and environmental monitoring.  The team includes an interdisciplinary group of recognized experts in the fields required to perform the services required for this contract. Team members and their responsibilities include:

Timmons Group:  Program and Project Management, Siting and Regulatory Coordination
Northstar Marine:  Marine Vessel Operations
AWS Truepower:  Metocean Conditions
Center for Conservation Biology (William & Mary/VCU) and Versar-GMI:  Avian Resources
AXYS Technologies:  Remote Sensing Systems Integration
Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and Cornell University Bioacoustics Research Program: Marine Mammals and Sea Turtles

We will leverage previous metocean and environmental monitoring work in Virginia and provide a path for development of an innovative solution that will complement future research efforts and lead to deployment of a system capable of serving the global offshore wind market,” said Rick Thomas, Timmons Group Principal for Environmental and Energy Solutions.
