Titleist Board Member Speaks At PGCC
Temecula, California - November 3, 2009 --- To the untrained eye golf may not have the same athletic appeal as football or basketball, so it might not make sense that nutrition and cardiovascular conditioning can play a large role in shaping a good golfer, but don’t tell that to Dr. Mark Smith. As a member of the Titleist Performance Institute’s Advisory Board, Dr. Smith finds himself educating golfers at every skill level about the importance of cardiovascular health and nutrition for the average person, not just for athletes.
Arriving at the college was a long road that began earlier this year. Ronna Semonian, PGCC’s resident Fitness for Golf instructor, heard Dr. Smith speak briefly at a Titleist certification conference back in February and as luck would have it, the two were seated next to each other on the flight back to San Diego. After discussing fitness, nutrition and golf, Semonian, knowing students would greatly benefit from Dr. Smith’s expertise and research, invited him to speak at PGCC. Explaining why she felt the students would respond well to Dr. Smith’s offerings, Ronna says “This fitness information is really exciting for students because it’s newer, its cutting edge.” The fitness regimen of high intensity sprint intervals, which Dr. Smith swears by, has proven useful and effective for more than just improving mental focus on a golfer’s game, it can drastically improve overall quality of life.
PGCC Student taking notes During Dr. Smith’s visit to the Professional Golfers Career College it became evident very quickly that he is a highly energetic and entertaining speaker. From one moment to the next Dr. Smith might sprint across the front of the auditorium demonstrating momentum and the effects of impact on the body, or drop to the floor to illustrate how to properly perform an exercise. Regardless of where he was, he spent the better part of 2 hours thoroughly educating PGCC students in St. Andrew’s Auditorium.
Employing entertaining videos and compelling scientific evidence Dr. Smith’s presentation extolled the benefits of adhering to the Paleo diet, a diet he became familiar with while he was an affiliate faculty at Colorado State University working with Dr. Loren Cordain, author of “The Paleo Diet”, in conjunction with high intensity interval training. A large group of particularly excited and engaged students stuck around for over an hour after the presentation had finished, asking questions and utilizing the one-on-one time. Semonian notes, “The nutrition is pretty basic, pretty logical, but the fitness, the fitness bucks tradition.” Though golf is a sport rooted firmly in tradition Semonian and Smith both feel that caring for your health is an important responsibility and the best methods to do that can change, all the more reason Semonian feels that “Students having access to this information is really pretty cool.”
