Leadership expert Will Marre highlights TOMS Shoes as a successful example of 21st century business in which giving is at the core of business strategy.

TOMS Shoes joins the ranks of such companies as Nike and FedEx as successful companies who are giving big. Will Marre, CEO of Realeadership Alliance and author of Save the World and Still Be Home For Dinner (Capital Books), is spotlighting a list of 25 top companies in a series called Giving is Winning who are integrating giving into their core business strategy.

According to Marre, giving and winning go together. “The companies on the list are making industry leading profits and growing at a healthy clip,” he contends. “When giving becomes an essential part of your culture, employees are inspired to create more value and consumers choose you.”

Inspired by his world travels, especially to Argentina, founder Blake Mycoski, was determined to create a company concerned with more than just the bottom line. Thus, TOMS gives a pair of new shoes to a child in need for every pair of shoes purchased. As of September 2010, TOMS has given over one million pairs of new shoes to children in need. TOMS has enjoyed rapid success, and in 2010 was number six on Fast Company’s Top 10 Retailers List.
