Trades Academy wins Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Education

Top of the South Trades Academy was, last week, announced as one of the winners at the inaugural Prime Minister's Education Excellence Awards. The Awards were introduced to celebrate outstanding achievement and combined effort that has created a change in the education of children and young people.

Top of the South Trades Academy was recognised in the 2014 Educational Focus category, which acknowledges developing learner led pathways through collaboration amongst secondary schools, tertiary providers and employers. Winning this award secured the Academy $20,000 in prize money.

NMIT congratules all tutors, staff and students involved.

The Top of the South Trades Academy provides secondary school students in our region the opportunity to gain NCEA while working towards a national certificate in a trade. This year, 225 students are attending NMIT one day a week for relevant hands-on learning with specialist tutors at either our Nelson, Blenheim or Woodbourne campuses. Students can study and pursue career pathways in 11 different areas including engineering, aquaculture, hairdressing and hospitality. Skills they learn help them go on to further study or into employment.

Winners and a full list of finalists, as well as criteria and categories, are featured on the Prime Minister's Education Excellence Awards website (external link) .
