Trekking holidays have become increasingly popular this year, according to specialist, The Adventure Company.

With Ben Fogle, Bruce Parry and even Chris Moyles’ adventures documented on television these destinations have captured the imagination of the public in the past 12 months.

Claire Wilson, Managing Director, also noted “Another contributing factor to their rise in popularity is their simplistic nature which makes them relatively cheap holidays. Accommodation is basic; teahouses, tents or alpine huts, there are no additional fees for activities and many of the meals are straightforward. There is little temptation to dig into your wallets.”

Nepal trekking holidays are currently leading the way in the popularity stakes after years of recent political stability and cheaper flights. The Adventure Company offer eight different trekking trips to the region, seven of which have seen booking numbers increase year on year.

One of the world’s classic treks, the Annapurna Circuit has seen a 26% increase in bookings this year. This 24-day trip includes a 17-day trek from the lowland foothills, paddy fields and bamboo forests up through the high-alpine scenery above the treeline. Including flights, this holiday works out at just £52 a day.

The Adventure Company’s Himalayan Explorer trip has also seen a 25% increase this year in bookings. The 16-day trip is a great introduction to walking in Nepal and includes a three-day trek in the Annapurna region.

Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains are often overlooked as a walking destination for trekking holidays in Europe, but it has become one of The Adventure Company’s top five destinations based on the popularity of it’s trekking trips in recent years. Morocco is a good year round trekking destination with guaranteed sunshine in the summer and the benefit of cooler temperatures in the mountains, combined with the variety of snow covered passes in the winter. There are many peaks above 4000m including Mount Toubkal, at 4,167m the highest mountain in North Africa.

Winter Toubkal is one of The Adventure Company’s most popular Moroccan trips with most departures fully booked in recent years and bookings are up by 8% this year already. So if you’re looking a different type of winter holiday don your crampons and ice axes and conquer Mount Toubkal on this popular an eight-day trip.

Finally, Peru and the Inca Trail are traditionally popular destinations for The Adventure Company but even this has seen an increase in the last 12 months. The High Inca Trail trip has enjoyed an increase of 20% in bookings and The Inca Trail an increase of 32%.
