Trend Micro Offers Multi-Layered Consumer Protection for The Latest Technologies and Trends Debuting at CES 2010
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2009- Staying true to its history of keeping consumers safe and ahead of security threats, Trend Micro today outlined potential security considerations arising from the stream of trends and technologies set to launch at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
What many of these new technologies at CES have in common is that they are developed specifically for the widest possible audience, rather than a tech-savvy few. There will be fun toys for the kids, household gadgets for mom and dad, devices for everything from parenting, entertainment and education, along with many other trends that offer cool cachet, ease of use and endless possibilities. What these new technologies also have in common is that they widen their user’s gateway to the Internet - a cyber thief’s dream.
" We’re still in the early days of the Internet, so the excitement over new toys and tools can make us forget that these devices also open doors to our homes,” said Carol Carpenter, general manager of the consumer and small business unit at Trend Micro. “We should be able to take full advantage of these innovations without worry. For that to happen, every home needs a comprehensive solution like Trend Micro Internet SecurityPro 2010 in place before unwrapping and fully enjoying their new gadgets.”
While thousands of gadgets and electronic devices emerge each year at CES, below are four new technologies and trends set to dominate the show:
Netbooks: Analysts say that the Netbook market may already have peaked. However, someone forgot to tell the manufacturers that there is a barrage of smaller computers looking to make big news. Despite enhanced graphics and other tweaks, many still count on portability and easy online access to find an audience. That flexibility comes with a price. For example, cybercriminals can steal credit card information and then transfer funds to their own account. According to a recent Trend Micro Threat Report, there will be more attacks directly targeting victims’ bank accounts in the coming year.
eBook readers: This previously-fringed market item is set to explode with rapidly increasing popularity and a new brand choices. Each new offering will bring a world of content (and new threats) with just a flick of the finger. Like Netbooks, these devices connect to the Internet to download their content via Wi-Fi connection, can store credit card information and can be easily accessed through the home network if not properly protected. Imagine opening up your eBook to find purchased content that you didn’t authorize!
Phones: Phones doubling as mini-computers continue to make the simple mobile phone the most-used channel to the Internet. In a 2009 Trend Micro smartphone survey, over 50 percent of smartphone users surf the Web from their device for over 30 minutes per week. Of these, more than 12 percent are spending more than 120 minutes per week surfing the Web. Easy access carries a high price tag including SMS text message spam or ID fraud.
IPTV: CES is predicting that television delivered over the Internet will be a defining trend of 2010. Consumers will begin embracing online delivery more than ever before, streaming their favorite TV shows to their computers. However, access to the Internet via Ethernet opens doors for cybercriminals to hack into the home network. With an open gateway, thieves can access even Netflix passwords. Imagine your movie queue changing, or even somebody altering the address on your account, leaving you paying for someone else’s rentals.
All of these gadgets and trends promise simplicity and convenience online - and that’s exactly what shapes Trend Micro’s philosophy in making that process more secure. According to Carpenter, “solutions like Home Network Defender, Trend Micro Mobile Security and the new Trend Micro Internet Security 2010 provide a solid line of defense against cybercriminals and online predators by stopping the threats at the router “gate,” the mobile device and the PC. Home Network Defender is an easy-to-install, easy-to-manage security service for homes with Linksys by Cisco routers. Custom designed by Trend Micro for Linksys by Cisco routers, this multi-layered home network security solution protects both the router and all Internet-enabled devices connected to it.”
