TRIO LATITUDE 41
RELEASES DEBUT RECORDING
SCHUBERT TRIO IN E-FLAT MAJOR, OP. 100, D 929
AND NOTTURNO INCLUDED ON NEW ELOQUENTIA CD
Trio Latitude 41 – Bernadene Blaha, piano; Livia Sohn, violin; and Luigi Piovano, cello – has chosen one of the seminal works of the chamber music repertoire, Schubert’s Trio in E-flat major, Op. 100, D 929, to present its calling card to the world of recorded music. The CD is being released on the French label Eloquentia, distributed by Harmonia Mundi.
Violinist Livia Sohn, speaking for the group, describes its origin. “Latitude 41 was formed a number of years after we all met at the Newport Music Festival one summer. We were never together as a trio during the festival, but played together in other formations. However, we all left with the same pipe dream – that if the three of us could play as a group it would be ideal, both musically and personally. While logistics – three separate, busy careers and the added dilemma of three different locales – kept that dream from becoming a reality for a few years, the thought of one day working together kept us from forming groups with other personnel. Eventually, we decided to overlook the impracticalities and form our trio, enabling us to do what is most important to us – make music.”
For its first recording, Trio Latitude 41 has chosen two works from Franz Schubert’s productive final year. The Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 100, D 929, was one of the few large-scale works by Schubert both to have been played in a public concert and published during his lifetime. The posthumously-published trio movement known as Notturno was possibly an alternate slow movement for Schubert’s other late trio (Op. 99, D 898, in B-flat Major).
Trio Latitude 41
Violinist Livia Sohn, cellist Luigi Piovano, and pianist Bernadene Blaha came together to form Latitude 41 in the summer of 2009, as a result of their previous musical collaborations and mutual passion for chamber music. Since then, highlights of Latitude 41 appearances have included the Newport Music Festival (opening gala in 2009, closing gala in 2011), the L’Ermitage Foundation in Los Angeles, and “Sundays Live” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, streamed live across the Internet and radio. Highlights of future engagements include a recital for Maverick Concerts in New York – America’s oldest continuous summer chamber music festival – and Music in the Morning, in Vancouver. The origin of the trio’s name stems from the fact that both the trio’s first performance venue in Rhode Island, and Rome, Italy, the home of cellist Luigi Piovano, share the same Latitude – 41 N. www.latitude41trio.com
