TROPOS NETWORKS SOLUTIONHELPS KEEP TRANSLINK BUSES ON SCHEDULEIN VANCOUVER, B.C.
SUNNYVALE, CA
--February 9, 2010 – Tropos Networks announced today that its wireless IP broadband mesh network is now fully operational in Vancouver, BC, where it’s being used to improve the on-time performance of nearly 80 public transit buses along busy Main Street. TransLink, the regional transportation authority, selected Novax Industries’ Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system, TransPOD, with Tropos as the communications network.
TransLink initiated the Main Street project to reduce travel time and improve on-time performance, thereby increasing ridership, customer satisfaction and reducing operational costs. Moreover, it will be especially beneficial for the thousands of people navigating Vancouver during the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics.
The Tropos mesh network includes fixed routers mounted on street fixtures as well as mobile routers onboard each bus. The network provides resilient communications for the TransPOD system that integrates GPS technology for real-time tracking of bus location, with the onboard Priority Request Generator (PRG). PRGs communicate with Priority Request Servers (PRS) at intersections to initiate a change in traffic signal lights giving buses priority through intersections. With the Tropos network in place, TransLink has the option to leverage the same broadband mesh communications infrastructure to deploy many more applications such as Internet access for passengers, mobile video security and credit card verification, should they so choose. Novax also provided system integration services for the project.
“The Main Street project is a great testament to the many benefits of the TransPOD transit signal priority system for improving public transportation and the reliability and performance of the Tropos mesh network for real-time communications,” said Novax Industries CEO David Atnikov.
“We’re very pleased to work with Novax Industries on this important project to give Vancouver bus passengers a better public transit experience while helping TransLink improve operational efficiencies and reduce costs,” said Mike Bailey, Tropos vice president of engineering and operations.
