It’s all about entertainment. While historically people used to go to the internet for research and information purposes, people regularly visit websites as a source of entertainment and TV3 has designed its website with this behavioural shift in mind. Increasingly women are using the internet on a regular daily basis and this offers new and diverse opportunities for advertisers.

Interactivity on the site is also a key feature. While viewers have been interacting with shows like Ireland AM for years, the website will take this engagement to a new level. Polls, blogs, comments and feedback are all examples of how the public can be heard both online and on air.

David McRedmond, Chief Executive of TV3 said:

“Two years ago when TV3 changed ownership, we announced our intention to develop both multi-channel and multi-media. Last month we completed our acquisition of Channel 6. Today is another milestone with the launch of what I believe to be Ireland’s best site for television. www.tv3.ie caters for the new generation of online users who are focussed on entertainment and Irish content.”

TV3 Head of Online Philippe Brodeur said:

“We have used the latest technology to build a website that offers everything a broadcaster should online. This marks a significant juncture in TV3’s history and allows us to compete with the very best out there. It’s really exciting to see the traffic grow and to be able to interact with our online community.”

Photographs were taken at the launch today by Dave Cullen Photography have been issued to your picture desk and are also available on request.

Note to the editor:

TV3

TV3 is the only privately owned terrestrial free-to-air national commercial television channel in the Republic of Ireland. Since the launch in September 1998, TV3 has become the second most viewed channel in the Republic of Ireland. The network also recently acquired Channel 6 and this October will launch its new online business.

TV3 provides real choice and a real alternative to the state broadcaster, RTE, for Irish viewers, giving them a wide range of programmes to suit the discerning modern Irish consumer, with very disparate tastes – from news and current affairs, to drama, documentaries, movies, sport and a wide range of top class Irish-made programmes.

TV3 has proved its position as a groundbreaker in Irish television since its inception. TV3 provides the first-ever breakfast television programme in the state, Ireland AM, which has been a huge success, reaching over 200,000 viewers each day. The network broadcasts the first ever daily arts and entertainment programme in the shape of Xposé, which has an enormous fan base and some 76,000 viewers daily. And TV3 ends the day with Ireland’s nightly news summary programme, Nightly News with Vincent Browne, which is watched by 88,000 people nightly and outperforms news on both BBC and UTV.
