Two former Coastal Plain League players, Luke Tender (Asheboro) and Will Callaway (Columbia), were named Class A Short Season Northwest League All-Stars. The 2014 NWL All-Star Game will take place August 6 at PK Park in Eugene, Ore.
Tendler played two seasons in the CPL for the Asheboro Copperheads before being drafted in the 29th round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft by the Texas Rangers earlier this summer in June. Since being drafted he has posted the third highest batting average in the NWL at .338 to go along with 13 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 33 RBIs for the Spokane Indians. The versatile outfielder has also stolen eight bases and scored 31 runs, serving as a true catalyst for the team.
The North Carolina A&T product spent both 2012 and 2013 playing for the Copperheads, with the latter being his most impressive. Tendler was named the CPL Hitter of the Year in 2013 after finishing with a league leading .351 batting average, eight doubles, two triples, eight home runs, and 40 RBIs. His elite talent helped lead Asheboro to both a first and second half West Division title.
Apposing Tendler in the NWL All-Star game will be former Columbia Blowfish Will Callaway. This is his second professional season after being drafted in the 37th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft by the San Francisco Giants. He earned an All-Star nod after batting .293 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 33 RBIs during the first half of the 2014 season for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.
Callaway played in only seven games for the Blowfish in 2011 prior to being drafted in June, but those games were very impressive. He finished with 13 total hits for a .519 batting average, while also swiping four bases in four tries.
Both players will be on display August 6 at PK Park, home of the Eugene Emeralds, in Eugene, Oregon. The game can be streamed live online with a membership to MiLB.tv.
