UBCNM Aims to Make Impact Close to Home

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine. Founded in 1997, the university welcomed its 20th matriculating class this August. UBCNM builds on the unique strengths each class brings to the program and plans to focus this year on increasing their impact in the local community, particularly the underserved populations in the Bridgeport area.

Hands-On Learning at Center for Excellence in Generative Medicine

(COE) in Generative Medicine has pioneered a naturopathic approach to epigenetic medicine that is both data-driven and patient-centered. Epigenetic medicine addresses food and environmental factors that interact with our genetics; while we can’t change our DNA, we do have some control over how it expresses. Students chosen as “Pathfinders” receive generous scholarships and start working with the COE from the start of their naturopathic education, participating in research in their first two years and joining the COE as interns in their third year.

New Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory Promotes Collaboration

The Division of Health Sciences at UB has opened a new interdisciplinary laboratory. The lab setup encourages collaboration among the health sciences disciplines, while allowing each of the colleges and institutes to work on individual projects. This arrangement prepares students to work in interdisciplinary settings, and sets a baseline comfort level for working alongside healthcare providers of different backgrounds. UB also encourages cross-disciplinary projects in which faculty from disparate disciplines collaborate on innovative research. Recent additions to the UB research staff have assisted our efforts to develop research opportunities for faculty and students. Most recently, a UBCNM faculty member, with support of students and staff, kicked off a multi-center research project, bringing together some of the naturopathic programs to assess patient perceptions of their health related to naturopathic care. In addition to the research aspect of the project, it is a great opportunity for intercollegial collaboration.

Faculty and Students Showcase Research

UB Faculty Research Day takes place every April. Students work with faculty on poster presentations, and the day-long event includes a keynote address from a prominent researcher. UBCNM faculty and students have been featured every year since the beginning of the event. Dr. David Terfera and his anatomy students have been our most consistent participants—a great opportunity for first year students!

Making Connections on Campus

As part of a larger university, UBCNM students have a unique opportunity to work and play with students from many different disciplines. In 2016, a group of UB faculty, staff, and students, including several UBCNM students, founded the UB Military Students Organization to serve the needs of active military and veterans on the UB campus. In September 2017, the group held its first official event: a banquet honoring military students, staff, and faculty. With 5% of our current student body holding military rank, UBCNM is proud to increase services to this community. UBCNM is reaching out to our university community in other ways, including a new series of lectures and workshops for undergraduate athletes. This year the College of Naturopathic Medicine and Nutrition Institute staff presented to the women’s soccer and men’s basketball teams on the basics of good nutrition and staying healthy for competition.

New Clinic Continues to Improve Patient Care

UBCNM continues to grow into our recently renovated clinic. The large rooms are conducive to whole-family care, with enough room for patients and their support system to work with our interns. The spectacular views of the Long Island Sound add to the healing atmosphere. Keep up with the latest news on UBCNM’s offerings and other noteworthy developments by visiting their website.
