Ubiquisys and Mobica announce femtocell podcase sync
Automatic Application Refreshes 3G Phone's Podcasts on Arrival Home
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona- Ubiquisys, the leading provider of 3G femtocells, and Mobica, a leading provider of mobile software and engineering services, today announced the release of a femtocell-powered podcast application. Mobica's application enables phones to automatically download the latest podcasts when entering the home zone, taking advantage of extremely fast low-cost 3G bandwidth delivered by the femtocell. The process is totally automatic - simply by arriving home, users get the latest podcasts to enjoy anywhere, without pressing any buttons on their phone. Podcast subscriptions are initially selected via a podcast aggregator website such as PodNova.
Mobica's application is one of the first to use Ubiquisys APIs that provide internet and handset applications access to presence information via a femtocell intelligence server. For developers, this system enables rapid application development without femtocell expertise. For operators, it opens the door to a new generation of simple practical application services with unprecedented time-to-market and low introduction cost.
Created to meet the requirements of a mobile operator, Podcast Sync is also a first from the handset application perspective: it is the first application to use Mobica's Generic Connection Framework. This gives mobile operators complete freedom to choose the media content type and source that can be delivered via the femtocell, helping to drive ARPU and user stickiness. The phone and web interfaces are easily customised, providing a range of branding and community portal opportunities and as all content is delivered via the femtocell, there is no load on the core network.
For consumers the key benefits are simplicity and usefulness. After you have selected your podcasts from the web, everything else is automatic - no buttons to press, no wires to plug-in. This simplicity makes multimedia more accessible to people with "normal" 3G phones, not just high-end models with keyboards, WiFi, and tech-savvy owners.
"Beyond providing additional network coverage and capacity, femtocells also provide operators with an exciting new platform for revenue generating services," said Chris Gilbert, CEO of Ubiquisys. "This announcement with Mobica represents the first of many applications and services set to be announced as operators begin to announce the launch of consumer services."
The two companies will be demonstrating Podcast Sync running on a Nokia 6120 Classic on the Ubiquisys booth (Hall 1, Stand G19) at Mobile World Congress.
About Ubiquisys
Ubiquisys was formed in 2004 to bring its ground-breaking ZoneGate femtocell technology to market. ZoneGate femtocells are manufactured with Sony UK Tech and are available as standalone units or as part of a residential gateway device such as Netgear's DVG834GH. The system supports multiple interfaces to the operator's core network, and is remotely managed and updated using standard TR-069 management systems such as Motive's Home Device Manager. Ubiquisys' sole focus is femtocells, and in 2007 it created the Femto Forum to promote standards and partnerships in this fast-emerging industry. In May 2008 ABI Research named Ubiquisys as the world's leading femtocell vendor in their Femtocell Vendor Matrix. In September 2008 the company announced that Softbank would be the world's first operator to offer commercial 3G femtocell services using the ZoneGate. Ubiquisys is funded by Accel Partners, Advent Venture Partners, Atlas Venture, Google and T-Mobile Venture Fund. For more information, visitwww.ubiquisys.com
