L’amour

Juan Diego Flórez, the Peruvian bel canto tenor, has just released his first album to be recorded exclusively in French. L’Amour (Decca) offers a personal review of the French operatic repertoire. Flórez reveals the expressive power of a dozen major works, from Donizetti to the romantic outpourings of Gounod and Massenet, including the famous Pourquoi me réveiller, ô souffle du printemps? from Werther. The disk not only features Flórez’s great virtuosity, but also unveils a new facet of the singer via a popular repertoire rarely performed on stage. This is the first solo album in four years by one of the classical world’s biggest stars, who reveals a voice that has become richer, rounder and softer.

Canal+

Macbeth, a movie from StudioCanal

StudioCanal and Film4 are currently filming Macbeth in Scotland and England. Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film stars Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and Marion Cotillard. One of Shakespeare’s best-known and most complex characters, Macbeth is a warrior who fears nothing, a leader who lusts after power and is eaten away by desire in a story of destructive passion and ambition set in war-torn 11th-century Scotland. The film is coproduced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech and Shame, both Oscar winners) and Laura Hastings-Smith (Hunger). Together with Film4, StudioCanal is financing the majority of the film and will distribute it in the UK, France and Germany, as well as managing international rights. In the United States, distribution will be handled by The Weinstein Company.
