It seems as if Seattle search marketing firms are a dime a dozen. There are more and more popping up every day, which means the competition is tough. In an effort to win new clients to their firm, a local Seattle search marketing firm has created a unique marketing technique – an online treasure hunt.

"We wanted to do something that was fun and interactive", explained Greg Block, a marketing director for the firm. "In addition to being fun and interactive, the goal was to show the clients just how important search marketing is to their business."

The company went about drawing up clues that would lead the clients to enter a specific search engine phrase. When that phrase was entered into a search engine it would bring up search results. One of the websites on those search engine results would have a 'keyword' that was part of the puzzle.

"The goal of this game was to show clients just how some of the sites ranked", explained Block. "We wanted to show them that just because they were a well-known site and people visited it a lot that did not mean that they would be at the top of major search engine results."

The keyword phrases were placed on the main page of some of the websites. The websites would rank anywhere from page 1 to page 3 on search engine results.

"We had to spread out our keywords", said Block. "It would do no good if the keywords were all on the very first website people visited. That would just be silly. We had to spread it out to show how sites rank differently."

Future clients enjoyed engaging in this type of marketing technique. The Seattle search marketing had over 300 individuals take part in the treasure hunt game. Many of those clients were from outside the area.

"We were surprised at how quickly word spread about this treasure hunt", said Block. "People from all over the world were asking to take part in it. We allowed it and that was the best decision."

Approximately 75% of those that took part in the treasure hunt, signed on as clients to the firm. This proved to be one of the most successful marketing campaigns launched by the firm.

"It was a lot of fun", said Fred, a newly signed client. "I figured if the company went to such lengths to do this for their clients, they would be a great firm to hire."
