Upper Peninsula Power Company Urges Customers with Outstanding Balances to Contact Company
Low-Income Energy-Assistance funds may still be available
Ishpeming MI - Customers of Upper Peninsula Power Company who have fallen behind on their electric bills should contact the company as soon as possible, said Jodi Pineau, the company's Customer Care Manager. By contacting UPPCO now, customers will be able to make payment arrangements that could eliminate a disruption in utility service to their households.
"Customers who contact us early to make arrangements are likely to find we're able to suggest solutions that don't include disconnection of service," said Pineau. "They will also be able to reach us more easily by avoiding the rush of customers who wait until the last minute."
UPPCO customer service representatives can be reached at 1-800-562-7680.
In addition, Pineau reminds customers who believe they might qualify for low-income energy assistance to apply while funds are available.
UPPCO reports that it still has nearly 3,000 customers who face losing electric service. In 2009, UPPCO disconnected service to more than 1,300 customers.
"The number of past-due customers is slightly lower than last year," said Pineau, "which is positive given the lagging economy. However, we do serve some communities that have been hit harder with business closures and job losses."
UPPCO has electronic payment options listed on its Web sitewww.uppco.com.Options include automatic monthly withdrawal from bank accounts, as well as one-time payments by check or credit card.
In addition, customers who struggle with winter bills could choose to join the UPPCO Budget Billing program, in which they pay an average bill all year round rather than seasonal high and low bills.
