Logistics planning processes underway as branding rollour takes place across UK
With 1,000 days to go until the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, UPS has already begun the huge logistical task of activating its role as Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In the coming three months, UPS will apply London 2012 branding to more than 3,600 vehicles and 2,800 uniforms across its entire UK operations.
Over the next 1,000 days and beyond, UPS will be responsible for virtually all the supply chain transportation and logistics services in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games via an integrated supply chain solution that includes venue logistics services, warehousing services and a distribution network that will pick-up and deliver everything from documents to heavy freight. UPS will also be responsible for all customs clearance, freight forwarding and courier services before, during and after the London 2012 Games.
Key to the logistical success of the Games will be UPS’s management of the London 2012 Games Logistics and Command Centre, a network of warehouse and distribution facilities totaling 70,000 m2. In advance of such a large-scale logistical operation, UPS is already working with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games’ (LOCOG) logistics team to ensure an extensive array of technology systems will be in place within those facilities to maintain precise control of the millions of sporting items and related equipment that will be stored and processed there before, during and after the Games.
The extensive planning process also includes tasks such as monitoring traffic patterns and determining optimal delivery routes in conjunction with LOCOG, to ensure UPS’s vehicles can reach their destinations efficiently and without delay.
