ORLANDO, FL – GameSim Inc., provider of software and services to the gaming, simulation, and geographic information systems (GIS) industries, announced today its Procedural Model Generation Service that will provide high-quality models to external simulation systems without the need for a large hand-created art library.
PMGS accomplishes this by generating 3D models procedurally on-demand, and focuses on generating distinct 3D models for buildings, vehicles, and life forms. Previously, large hand-created art libraries were utilized that required hours of research and maintenance. GameSim’s Procedural Model Generation Service (PMGS) will offer a seemingly infinite set of random models as a service over the network, via a REST interface.
PMGS allows the static model creation process to be streamlined, which is able to save on labor costs by procedurally generating building, vehicle, and life form model libraries. This method provides a more efficient way of generating new content because it allows the user to skip the step of recreating an entire model library. Using a REST interface, PMGS is able to interact with other systems by communicating over a network. This provides products, such as GameSim’s Conform, a service that is able to procedurally generate building, vehicle, and life form models on an as needed basis. Additionally, PMGS allows models to be generated at multiple detail levels to fit the specific needs of a user.
“We felt there had to be a better way to manage art integration so that artists could spend time developing a virtual environment rather than maintaining and sifting through an art library,” said Andrew Tosh, GameSim founder and president. “For example, model development traditionally was a time intensive task for even minor supporting elements. With this service the creator tells the network what it needs and in return receives a high-quality 3D model in an instant.”
One example for use of the Procedural Modeling Generation Service with SE Core is in the development of a virtual environment. To develop a building, the integrated system supplies the building footprint, type, height and location to the Procedural Modeling Generation Service, via a REST interface. From there a high-quality 3D model is generated with appropriate cultural information from the selected part of the world and sent over the network. In the future, PMGS could be integrated into systems, such as Unreal, CryENGINE Sandbox, and VBS2.
PMGS is funded by the US Army Research Laboratory, Human Research and Engineering Directorate, Simulation and Training Technology and is provided with Government Purpose Rights. The US Army PEO STRI Synthetic Environment Core (SE Core) Program is the first Program of Record planning to integrate PMGS.
