U.S. Bank is the first major bank in the United States to allow customers to set up bill payments by taking a photo of their bills with a smartphone or tablet instead of manually entering payment information.

The bank partnered with SanDiego-based Mitek to bring the program to its customers.

The patented technology securely extracts relevant information from the paper bill and populates fields required to make a mobile payment. The customer can then verify the information and schedule the payment.

The service is available free of charge to customers via U.S. Bank’s iPhone, iPad and Android apps.

According to a statement from U.S. Bank, research forecasts mobile photo bill pay will be adopted by 33 percent of adults in the nation by 2018. It said another study suggests 1 in 5 customers will use the feature.

“We continue to leverage the capabilities of smartphones, and use innovative ways of making banking more convenient for our customers,” Niti Badarinath, senior vice president and leader of U.S. Bank’s mobile banking channel, said in the statement. “U.S. Bank customers were among the first in the nation to be able to use their mobile device to deposit checks. Now, we’ve made it really easy for our customers to enroll and use BillPay, add billers and pay bills whenever and wherever they choose.”
