NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (NNS) -- Guided-missile frigate USS Elrod (FFG 55) arrived in Mauritania for a scheduled port visit, Jan. 29.

The visit serves to continue U.S. 6th Fleet's efforts to strengthen maritime partnerships to enhance regional stability.

"We're elated to be here," said Cmdr. Brad Stallings, commanding officer of Elrod. "I'm looking forward to building relationships with Mauritanian leaders that will prove invaluable during future operations."

During Elrod's visit, the ship is scheduled to host a reception and conduct a bilateral exchange in damage control, boarding techniques, and expeditionary medical care. This knowledge exchange will prepare both services for an at-sea boarding exercise immediately following the visit.

Upon return from deployment, Elrod is scheduled for decommissioning after more than 30 years of service.

Elrod is currently on a scheduled deployment in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
