MARYSVILLE, Wash. (NNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) held a homecoming party for the crew and their families at the Tulalip Resort hosted by the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), Feb. 6.
The party celebrated Nimitz' safe and successful return from a 9-month Western Pacific deployment to the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th areas of responsibility.
"Events like these are exactly what the crew needs following a deployment," said Electronics Technician 3rd Class Anthony Black. "Gathering the whole crew and letting them blow off steam is good for morale and unit cohesion."
Following opening remarks by Capt. Jeff Ruth, Nimitz' commanding officer, three Sailors were awarded the John C. Stennis Leadership award. The award is given to Sailors who exhibited exceptional leadership qualities in 2013, in honor of Senator John C. Stennis.
The recipients were Lt. Cmdr. Russell Lawrence, Nimitz' aircraft handling officer, Chief Hull Maintenance Technician Aaron Lyon and Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 2nd Class Lauren Perry.
"I'm honored to receive this award and carry on the legacy of Senator Stennis," said Perry. "I'm very thankful for my chain of command and everyone who helped me throughout the year."
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed food, music and prizes before concluding the festivities.
