Viewers Say Economy is Improving after Seeing News of Dow Topping 10,000

, October 19, 2009– A new media study among 385 viewers of a news clip featuring the Dow Jones Industrial topping 10,000 revealed that more than half of viewers (57%) reported that the national economy is improving.
The study was conducted by HCD Research using its MediaCurves.com® website during October 19-20 to obtain viewers’ perceptions of a CNN news clip featuring the rise in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to over 10,000 for the first time this year.
Despite reports of the improved economic conditions, the majority of viewers (68%) who indicated that the economy was improving also stated that they do not plan to increase their spending. In addition, 42% of the viewers reported that they are currently searching for a job.

While viewing the video, participants indicated their levels of interest by moving their mouse from left to right on a continuum. The responses were recorded in quarter-second intervals and reported in the form of curves. The participants were also asked to respond to post-viewing questions.
