Vodacom's gridstar makes do-it-yourself fame a reality!

Drum roll please... Melina Katenda and Refi Tsela have been voted the first two winners of gridstar, Vodacom's talent contest launched on 1 December 2008 - available to everyone in South Africa! Gridstar is a new and interactive social networking platform that gives undiscovered talent in South Africa a chance to shine.

The winners were selected through a combination of public votes and a judging process. Both Melina and Refi have each won R10 000 and stand a chance of winning gridstar's grand prize to the value of R100 000 at the end of the 12-month competition.

Karaoke enthusiast, Melina Katenda or "Ultramel" as she is also known, was announced as gridstar's very first winner end of December 2008. An IT student from the University of Johannesburg, Melina has been honing her skills since the age of 9 and is also a talented musician on the guitar.

January's gridstar winner; Refi Tsela, proves that perseverance really does pay. After being placed second in December's competition, Refi, also known as, Refi D, delivered an even better performance to win top honours a month later. The talented Refi D is not only focused on her talents but is currently a student at Uplands College in White River, Mpumalanga.

The first step for prospective gridstars is to register by SMSing 'gridstar' to 33313 (R0.50 per SMS). Once registered, entrants can simply capture their performances on video with a cellphone and MMS their entries to gridstar as follows:

• Vodacom customers can MMS* their video clips to 082 008 0032 (standard rates apply);
• MTN customers can MMS* their video clips to 083 930 0251 (standard rates apply).

*Remember to rename the MMS subject to the title of the video entry.

Alternatively, entrants can also go towww.gridstar.co.zaon a PC or MAC or go towap.gridstar.co.zaon their cellphone and follow the prompts to upload their video entries.

Gridstar fans can post messages, rate the video entries and interact with their favourite artists onwww.gridstar.co.zawithout registering.
