SYDNEY (Thursday, 4 September 2014): Sydney’s Northern Beaches will play host to the first Wahu Surfer Groms Comp of the 2014/2015 season, when event one of the ten-event series kicks off at Dee Why from Saturday 6th September.
Over 100 competitors are expected to compete in the two-day event, which will see some of Australia's most promising young surfers having fun in and out of the water.
Early swell forecasts indicate that there will be a two-to-three foot south-east swell on offer for all competitors.
“Surfing NSW is proud to be rolling out the first Wahu Surfer Groms Comp of the new series,” said Surfing NSW Event Manager Luke Madden. “The Northern Beaches leg of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series is one of the most highly anticipated events on our calendar, so we expect the talent pool to be extremely deep. It’s exciting to see the new talent that gets unearthed at every single Wahu event over the course of the series.”
The main base for event one of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series is Dee Why, with back-up locations of Curl Curl, Long Reef and Collaroy.
All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order
Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comps caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
It just isn’t all about the action in the water at the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps with plenty of beach games to keep everyone entertained, while each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt plus a Wahu beach product.
A qualified chef will also be firing up the Everdure barbie making sure the hordes of grommets and staff don’t go hungry with the Everdure Sausage Sizzle feeding the crew on both days of competition at all 10 events.
The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are proudly supported by Everdure Barbeques, Surfing Australia and Surfing NSW.
