The British and Irish Lions go into Saturday's second Test against South Africa with both history and altitude against them in Pretoria.
They have only won one series in the modern era after losing the first Test.
There are five changes, four tactical and one enforced, for a game to be played at an altitude of over 1,200m.
Rob Kearney takes over at full-back with Luke Fitzgerald coming on to the wing, while Adam Jones, Matthew Rees and Simon Shaw beef up the front five.
South Africa make just one change with former International Rugby Board (IRB) player of the year Schalk Burger returning at open-side flanker in place of Heinrich Brussow, who drops to the bench.
Lions still believe - McGeechan
The world champions survived a stirring Lions fightback to win the first Test 26-21 in Durban and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The only time in the modern era the Lions have some back from losing the first Test to win a series was in 1989 when a Finlay Calder-inspired side fought back to beat Australia 2-1, although coach Ian McGeechan has actually won the second Test in all three series he has been in charge.
"Both teams will be better for the run last weekend and we know we will have to step up our performance to ensure that we again take the game to the opposition and are more accurate in taking our opportunities," said McGeechan.
"As a squad the Lions still have everything to play for. The players know that the outcome of the Test series comes down to Saturday and they are determined to take the series to a decider in Johannesburg (on 4 July)."
It's a great day for him and hopefully we can make it more special by winning this series
Victor Matfield on Burger's 50th cap
South Africa have won 71% of their matches at Loftus Versfeld and Lions forwards coach Warren Gatland has no doubt they will be typically robust in their approach on Saturday.
"The South Africans have very much a bully mentality, to come in and try to dominate, pushing players off the ball," he said.
"I would be very surprised if any of the Lions players take a backward step to any physical threat imposed by the South Africans.
"There is definitely no threat of us sitting back and playing negatively - we've got to go out and get stuck in."
The second Test will take place on the Highveld in the centre of South Africa but Springbok winger Bryan Habana, like Burger a former IRB player of the year, dismissed the hosts' altitude advantage as "circumstantial".
The human body takes time to adjusting to playing at altitude, where there is less oxygen, and half of South Africa's team play their provincial rugby on the Highveld, while the national side also regularly trains at altitude.

In 1989 in Australia, the only time the Lions have come behind to win a series, McGeechan also shook things up with five changes after losing the first Test in Sydney
Lions doctor Gary O'Driscoll is confident the Lions' strategy of flying up the day before the game is the right one.
He revealed the Lions have been planning their strategy for two years and talked to the English Institute of Sport and American NFL side Pittsburgh Steelers among others during their research.
"The medical science points to two options. The first one is to go to altitude and stay there for two weeks to allow your body to acclimatise," said the Irishman.
"The other option is to play your event as quickly as you can to avoid the short-term effects. By flying this afternoon and playing within 24 hours we avoid the short-term effects. We have managed it in an optimum way."
The Lions go into the game with far more optimism that looked likely after a first-half battering in the first Test.
Shaw calls for more physical approach
The home pack dominated the first 50 minutes in Durban and they led 26-7 when coach Peter de Villiers decided to bring on a raft of replacements.
The Lions then assumed control and some superb play brought them to within sight of an unlikely victory.
However, the way their pack was dismantled by the powerful Springbok eight - and in particular loose-head-prop Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira - has led to the three changes up front.
After impressively shoring up the scrum after coming on in the second half, Adam Jones and Rees both start alongside Gethin Jenkins in Pretoria as the Lions field an all-Welsh front row for the first time since 1955.
Hooker Lee Mears and tight-head Phil Vickery, who was taken apart in the scrums, drop out of the squad entirely.
But their England team-mate Shaw will become the oldest player to make his Lions Test debut, at the age of 35, after replacing Alun Wyn Jones in the second row as the tourists search for extra power in the tight areas of the game.
Behind the scrum Kearney is a classy replacement at full-back for the injured Lee Byrne, while Fitzgerald is handed a chance to impress as England wing Ugo Monye pays the price for poor finishing.
Bowe looks to right Lions wrongs
The seven Ireland players in the team - Paul O'Connell, David Wallace, Jamie Heaslip, Brian O'Driscoll, Fitzgerald, Tommy Bowe and Kearney - is a post-war record.
South Africa have elected to keep a settled side with the return of first-choice open-side Burger to win his 50th cap in place of Brussow the only change.
Springbok lock Victor Matfield said: "Schalk brings us a lot of experience. He's a big strong ball carrier who's everywhere on the park.
"He's not as renowned at fetching as Heinrich but he's been one of our star players for the last four or five years and he's playing his 50th Test here.
"It's a great day for him and hopefully we can make it more special by winning this series."
