The Welsh Broadband Support Scheme that was set up to increase broadband Internet access to remote locations has been extended by the Welsh Government.

Hampshire, February 8, 2012 - PressReleasePoint The Welsh Broadband Support Scheme that was set up to increase broadband Internet access to remote locations has been extended by the Welsh Government.

The scheme allows households, communities and businesses to apply for a grant of up to £1000 to assist with the installation of broadband Internet.

The £2 million project was set up in 2010 and was due to complete in March 2012. However, the extension means that more homes and businesses will be able to apply for funding. The project will be running alongside the new Next Generation Broadband for Wales (NGBW) project from from March 2012 through to 2015.

Edwina Hart, the Business Minister for Wales, explains that the extension will ensure that there is no gap in funded support between the Welsh Broadband Support Scheme and the Next Generation Broadband for Wales projects.

So far the project has approved 2,038 applications, which includes 16 community projects that provide broadband to 918 homes. The project has so far provided £1,662,709 towards new broadband installations. To be eligible your premises must be in a broadband “Not Spot” or “Slowspot” and not able to receive Internet speeds over 2 Mbps.

Tooway Broadband Reaches Wales’ Notspots

The funding extension is good news for Satellite Internet providers like Bentley Walker who provide the technology needed to get rural users online. Bentley Walker’s most popular product in Wales is Tooway which delivers 10Mbps broadband internet through a satellite dish.

Tooway is firmly aimed at home and small business users, like those in Wales, who struggle to get fast reliable internet connections.  The funding in Wales covers the cost of the satellite system and installation, customers are then responsible for the monthly subscription via their chosen broadband service provider.
