Traceability And Multi-Modal Voice Applications

The traditional distinction between voice and RF applications is disappearing as old school voice-directed warehouse applications are giving way to multi-modal voice applications that combine voice direction, speech recognition, barcode scanning, and device displays. Multi-modal voice provides flexibility and efficiency in capturing product-level data, helping DCs to meet traceability objectives without adding to costs. Kennametal's North American DC Realizes Significant Productivity Gains With Jennifer Voice Picking

Cleveland, Ohio Distribution Center Sees Immediate Performance Gains Using Jennifer With SAP to Replace Traditional Barcode Scanning

Lucas Systems, Inc., the leading innovator of warehouse productivity solutions for mobile workers and distribution center managers, today announced that Kennametal Inc. has achieved immediate improvements in distribution center operations since installing Jennifer VoicePlus. Kennametal has installed Jennifer in its Cleveland, Ohio DC for voice picking, putaway and cycle counting to replace barcode scanning processes. Within weeks, associate productivity significantly improved across all functions working with Jennifer. Jennifer integrates with Kennametal’s SAP WM system.

“Customers rely on us to deliver mission-critical products, on-time, every time, so we are constantly looking for ways to improve operational effectiveness in our DC,” says Tom McNamara, Manager America’s Distribution, of Kennametal. “Jennifer has helped us achieve immediate productivity gains by streamlining processes, reducing set up steps, and eliminating time-consuming manual exception processes. We have already experienced a double-digit improvement in picking productivity, and we’ve also seen similar gains in putaway. We can now also track the productivity of cycle counting, which we were unable to do before.

“Beyond the productivity gains, we are reducing picking and putaway errors, spending less time training new hires, providing a safer work environment for employees, reducing the distances employees walk every day, and devoting less time to managing labor, inventory control and other miscellaneous warehouse activities. In addition to the hands-on benefits for employees, Jennifer’s Engage Management Console helps supervisors and managers identify and react to exceptions more quickly, as well as to better allocate people in response to changes in order volumes. We are still early in our ramp-up, but we are extremely pleased with the gains we have seen since installing Jennifer less than two months ago.”

The Jennifer VoicePlus system at Kennametal integrates with the company’s SAP WM system. The Jennifer voice applications utilize voice, scanning, and device screens to ensure the most effective, efficient technology is used at each step in the process. For example, users scan tote license plates to identify putaway and picking orders, while relying on voice direction and speech recognition to confirm locations and quantities. The Jennifer voice applications at Kennametal run on standard Motorola MC3190 multi-modal mobile computers.

“Kennametal is a great example of how world-class industrial manufacturers are applying technology to improve supply chain performance,” says Jeff Slevin, Chief Operating Officer of Lucas Systems. “Lucas and the Kennametal operations team have a shared vision for using the best technology for each job in the DC, so managers, engineers and staff were very receptive to our approach of seamlessly combining voice, scanning and screens to optimize process steps. From the beginning their team understood the value of an engineered approach to designing, configuring, and deploying a flexible, optimized system tailored to their operations.”

Lucas Systems Expands European Presence, Adding Development and Support Staff in the U.K.

COO Jeff Slevin Is Heading Lucas Systems’ European Expansion To Support Customer Requests For Implementation and Support Services

Lucas Systems, Inc., the leading innovator of warehouse productivity solutions for mobile workers and distribution center managers, today announced the expansion of its European operations to better support existing partners and customers, and to grow its install base of Jennifer™ VoicePlus users throughout Europe. Jeffrey Slevin, Chief Operating Office of Lucas, has relocated to the U.K. to head up the expansion of Lucas Systems EMEA, with offices in High Wycombe. Jennifer, the Lucas solution for voice picking and other warehouse operations, supports all major European languages.

“Our long-term plans for global growth are driven by market and customer pull,” said Slevin. “In addition to existing European partners, like Dastronic in Belgium, that have already installed Jennifer solutions for their customers, we have a number of global customers that are expanding their use of Jennifer voice solutions to new facilities in Europe. We believe that a local implementation and support presence is key to providing partners and customers the innovative solutions, industry-best implementation services, and world-class support that are the hallmarks of our success in North America.”

He adds: “Voice is widely-recognized as a best practice for improving warehouse operations throughout Europe. In addition to warehouses adopting voice for the first time, many existing voice picking systems are nearing their end-of-life. Many of those existing voice users are looking for alternatives that provide operational value above and beyond legacy voice-only systems running on proprietary hardware. For those companies, Jennifer VoicePlus provides an optimal solution that combines next-generation application capabilities that are supported on a growing array of powerful, cost-effective hardware platforms – including standard, rugged mobile computers and next-generation wearable devices.”

Lucas Systems Introduces Jennifer VoicePlus For Smartphones - Industry-First Voice Picking Solution

At MODEX 2014 Lucas Systems Is Introducing The First Voice-Directed Warehouse Solution For Smartphones, Combining Industrial Speech Recognition With Consumer Smarts

Lucas Systems, Inc., the leading innovator of warehouse productivity solutions for mobile workers and distribution center managers, today announced that Jennifer VoicePlus applications will be certified on smartphones, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S4. Lucas will be showing a live Jennifer voice picking demonstration on the Samsung Galaxy S4 this week in Booth 3523 at the MODEX 2014 trade show in Atlanta, the largest supply chain and material handling event in North America. The new Jennifer solution will be generally available in the second quarter of 2014.

Jennifer VoicePlus is designed to permit the seamless use of voice direction, speech recognition, visual user interfaces, and barcode scanning, similar to smartphone applications. The Jennifer solution for smartphones includes industrial-grade accessories to create a powerful, rugged, secure and economical solution for the warehouse.

“This new Jennifer VoicePlus solution for smartphones represents the next logical step in the evolution of our offering and in the continuation of our leadership in application innovation for the mobile worker in the warehouse,” says Jennifer Lachenman, VP of Product Strategy at Lucas Systems. “Smartphones are designed to support the use of voice, screen, and imaging, so they are a natural fit for Jennifer VoicePlus. More importantly, the smartphone ecosystem is driving mobile technology innovation and new types of smart and durable wearable devices that create the possibility of even more powerful, productive warehouse applications in the future. In the end, that’s what DC operators are looking for: solutions that will provide even greater operational efficiency, ease of use, and flexibility for a changing workforce.”

Jennifer VoicePlus solutions support end-to-end warehouse processes, not just voice picking, and include the Serenade Speech Recognition Platform, which provides superior recognition quality across languages, diverse users and accents, and noisy industrial environments. The new solution for the Samsung Galaxy S4, the world’s best-selling smartphone, includes additional third-party accessories, certified Bluetooth headsets and Bluetooth barcode scanners. Following the completion of field testing, the solution will be generally available in the second quarter of 2014.

“Lucas is the leader in delivering applications that make work easier and more productive for users, and in moving the warehouse market away from voice-only applications and proprietary voice-only hardware to more flexible and productive multi-modal applications running on standard mobile computers,” says Lachenman. “We will continue to deliver Jennifer voice applications on the widest possible range of industrial hardware platforms, in addition to smartphones and other new mobile and wearable devices. Our goal, from the day we were founded, is to leverage the best-available technology to deliver application innovations that our customers need to compete in the future.”
