We’re hiring! Intern position available at Kendal Museum

Kendal Museum is recruiting! We're looking for a fundraising intern to support the Curators with collections and outreach.

Description:

Kendal Museum, run by Kendal College is looking for a collections and outreach intern. This would be a great introduction to an individual looking to start their museum career.

Collections:

- Working on the newly refurbished archaeology gallery the intern will assist the curators with:

- Collection care, moving, handling and conservation of artefacts.

- Redisplay the artefacts in new cases of our prehistory, 19th century and Roman sections.

- Writing and editing of display labels and other forms of interpretation.

- Updating and editing artefacts on MODES.

- Carrying out the necessary administrative tasks associated with the role.

Outreach:

Education:

- Working with the Education Office the intern will assist with the summer programme of events for visitors in the galleries. These include informing and engaging with the public with our handling collections, helping with the Festival of Archaeology events, answering enquiries and assisting with museum talks.

- Create learning resources for visitors including information panels and displays.

Marketing:

- Provide marketing assistance and updating social media and press relations.

- Coordinating in-house promotional displays and helping with events such as; museum workshops, Festival of Archaeology and Kendal College events.

- Network with local organisations, building a bank of knowledge on future opportunities and following leads with the Cumbrian Consortium and Museum Development North West.

- Carrying out the necessary administrative tasks associated with the role.

Customer Service:

- Provide cover on front desk for front of house duties.

What skills and qualities do you need?

- This position is ideally suited to someone looking to commence a career in museums, preferably a graduate of a related museum / heritage subject.

- The candidate would preferably have a full drivers licence.

- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, speaking to group of people on the museum.

- An interest in a career in heritage/ museum services.

- Organisational skills with the ability to work on own initiative and effectively facilitate and work within a team.

- Good computer and social media skills.

- Working to deadlines, methodical and accurate.

- Ability to be flexible with working hours; the position is a Tuesday to Saturday role with some evening work required.

When will I be needed?

To start ASAP in July, on a six month placement, five days a week (Tuesday to Saturday).

Minimum wage of £6.31 per hour over 37 hours per week.

Due to funding this position is available to 18 to 24 year olds only.
