Women’s Cycling Interview: Masters Racer Kim Wik

Kim is a Cat 2 masters racer that started racing in 2007. She is the Northern California Nevada Cycling Association 2014 district time trial champion for her age group, but her goal is to win a master's national title. Kim has made cycling a part of her lifestyle by bike commuting, including to her job with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. Cycling gives her goals and challenges to constantly see how she can improve and gain fitness and strength.

What do you love about racing?

I love competition, always have, especially growing up as an athlete. I also enjoy the camaraderie that racing brings and the tight knit community. It's like another family.

What are some of your favorite or notable races?

Masters Nationals; Madera Stage Race winning 35+; Mariposa Stage Race winning 45+ Circuit/Road Race. I really like to race stage races!

What motivates you to keep training?

I like to train and get as fast and strong as I can. I like being fit, and if I improve at certain races I know my hard training is paying off.

Where do you enjoy riding your bike the most?

Country roads, especially in and around Healdsburg, California. I love to train out there. The scenery is beautiful.

What advice do you give to women who are new to riding a bike?

Take some skills clinics, find a local club and ride with a group.

Who is most instrumental in getting you to where you are today?

My coach and my boyfriend Richard. Their support keeps me going and want to achieve more.

What do you like to do in your downtime off the bike?

I like to relax at home or with friends. Do some yoga, because that's one thing I really need to practice.
