EAU CLAIRE – Xcel Energy continues to closely monitor the water level on the Chippewa Flowage, which augments river flows for six of Xcel Energy’s 19 hydroelectric projects.

As of Sept. 22, the Chippewa Flowage was at an elevation of 1,310.09 feet and continues its slow decline due to the severe drought conditions. Last year at this time, the elevation was at 1310.76 feet or approximately eight inches higher, according to Rob Olson, plant superintendent, Xcel Energy Hydro Operations. "We continue to discharge slightly more than the minimum flow of 250 cubic feet per second and will do so until significant precipitation results in increased inflows into the Chippewa Flowage." In order to maintain maximum reservoir elevation as the drought persists, the discharge from the dam has not changed since April 10.

The northern half of Wisconsin, particularly the area surrounding the Chippewa Flowage, has been experiencing a moderate to severe drought for about five years. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor released Sept. 15, the area experiencing severe or moderate drought conditions has expanded slightly since August.

The drought conditions affect resort owners, outdoor recreation enthusiasts, lakefront property owners and farmers, as well as hydroelectric power production. To keep property owners aware of current water levels, Olson provides quarterly forecasts to the Chippewa Flowage Area Property Owners Association, resource agencies and other stakeholders.

Xcel Energy has a long history of working closely with government agencies and local stakeholders to implement agreements and plans to help maintain flows on the Chippewa River that protect fish and aquatic species and support hydro generation.

"As we move forward, we’ll be conservative with water releases and continue to work closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and property owners to ensure adequate protection of the Chippewa Flowage area and the downstream river," Olson said.
