Yale ITS launched an Instagram account about a year ago to raise awareness of its services to the campus community. Since its inception, the account has evolved into a showcase of images by ITS Photo & Design, and a learning resource for those interested in photography.
Accessible online and via mobile apps, Instagram is a sharing application that allows users to upload photos and provide informative captions.
Yale ITS began expanding its social media presence in the summer of 2013 to inform university students, faculty, and employees of the many technological resources available on campus, according to Susan West, Associate Director, Strategic Communications in the Office of the CIO. Susan notes that almost 900 users follow , and the has accumulated more than 318 likes.
Decades of Experience
Photographer Bill Sacco has played an instrumental role in the evolution of the Yale ITS Instagram account. Bill has been working as a photographer on campus for 45 years, and has significant experience in technical photography. He spent nearly 10 years of vacations photographing Caribbean coral reefs, and offered 30 years of photography services to the science area at the Peabody Museum.
Bill has been sharing his noteworthy photography experience through the Yale ITS Instagram account for approximately three months. Most of his photos are taken locally, accompanying photography tips in the captions. Bill says that his Instagram posts are designed to "provide purely technical tips, discuss a photography principle, or simply provide a little inspiration."
Using Instagram as a vehicle to share information is a promising initiative to capitalize on, especially because of 21st century America’s on-the-go nature. Bill adds, "Instagram entries are very small and much easier for a busy person to digest than a textbook." The application is therefore a perfect way for members of the Yale community to support ITS, gain insight on technical photography principles, and admire the beauty that the campus offers.
Since Bill's initial post on the Instagram account, the number of followers has more than quadrupled. "I sense a desire in many people I have talked to on campus to learn to do photography better," Bill comments. "Everyone I have mentioned the Instagram contributions to have been interested in following them and seeing more."
