Yunker Lecture to Feature Nanotech Expert
5-11-09
CORVALLIS, Ore. The annual Yunker Lecture at Oregon State University will be presented Wednesday, June 3, by Paul McEuen, a leading expert on the science and technology of nanostructures.
In his talk, Small is All: Nano, Bio, and the Future of Technology, McEuen will explore the continuing shrinkage and miniaturization of technology, and how nanotechnology will change the future. The presentation will be in Weniger Hall Room 151 at 5 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
A professor of physics at Cornell University, McEuen has been a pioneer of single molecule devices, scanning probe microscopy and applications of nanoelectronics in chemistry and biology. He is one of the worlds leading experts on carbon nanotubes.
Paul McEuen is one of the most prominent scientists in the field of nanophysics, said Ethan Minot, an assistant professor in the OSU Department of Physics. Hes created everything from the first transistor made from a single molecule to the worlds thinnest guitar string, and is also producing a new novel about a physicist who saves the world from an evil nanotech plan.
The Yunker Lecture Fund was established in 1981 in honor of Edwin Yunker, a member of the OSU physics faculty from 1925 to 1968.
About the OSU College of Science: As one of the largest academic units at OSU, the College of Science has 14 departments and programs, 13 pre-professional programs, and provides the basic science courses essential to the education of every OSU student. Its faculty are international leaders in scientific research.
