Z Animation’s Caroline Attia Keeps Up Competitive Edge with Thiomucase Spot
French Animation Director Caroline Attia, based out of Paris, has come out with a new spot, which keeps in her unique style of creating a very colorful, visually complex world, but with such simplicity at its core. Represented by Executive Producer Peter Barg at Z Animation (www.zanimation.tv), Attia’s work has always been amongst the most striking and moving of all animated commercial work. Attia is best known for her very moving and detailed PSA “Sarah,” which has won an ADDY, nominated at the 2009 Annie Awards, has been selected for the 2009 Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Attia’s follow-up to “Sarah” is a simple spot that tells the story of a woman being disappointed with her figure. She decides to start eating more healthy foods, and exercising more. She looks in the mirror at the results, and again is displeased with the results. Suddenly her reflection steps out from behind the mirror and hands her a tube of Thiomucase, a cream that tightens your skin and reduces visible signs of aging and the appearance of cellulite. She applies the Thiomucase and looks back in her mirror. Her reflection notices that the Thiomucase has worked, and the reflection magically changes the woman into a dress and sunglasses. Looking better than she has before, due to the effects of the Thiomucase cream, she is ready to head out on the town with her cat.
Since this spot was about the beginning of summer, Attia wanted to reflect that with her light treatment of colors. The fact that orange was the color of the brand helped out greatly in creating a bright color palette for the entire spot. Attia also had a specific look she wanted to achieve for the woman in the spot. “I wanted the girl character to look average, but not too model-like so that most women could identify with her.”
Using Photoshop, Flash, and After Effects to finally put everything in motion, Attia’s work is nothing short of beautiful, as with all of her spots. Says Attia,”I am happy with the amount of liberty I had with it. The script was fun and full of great ideas. We had to cut a lot, due to the time. The spot was supposed to be thirty seconds and ended up being forty-five seconds, but the first draft of the script was at least one or two minutes. I am pretty happy with the final result. I also did the sound on this. It’s not the greatest part, but I think it adds a lot to the animation, and it was a great experience for me.”
