Nurses, labor leaders, and activists from across the globe, including representatives from 25 countries, are gathering for the Global Nurses Solidarity Assembly, being held Sept.12-15, in San Francisco, Calif. The event is organized by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), an affiliate of National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union and professional organization of registered nurses in the United States.

Attempts to reopen international ivory trade fails
On day six of the forum in Geneva, Switzerland, Zambia abandoned its bid to sell its ivory stockpiles as part of a proposal to downlist its elephants to Appendix II, opting instead to only seek permission to export other elephant products, which failed. A proposal by Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to sell stockpiled ivory from their countries and South Africa also failed when voted on by attending delegates from the 183 country strong forum.

Berklee Acts Were Everywhere at Newport Jazz
Less than a week after the Newport Folk Festival closed with a star-studded final set, the Newport Jazz Festival brought more music to Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. Now in its 65th year (five years the Folk Festival’s senior), the three-day concert drew marquee acts including Herbie Hancock, Thundercat, Corinne Bailey Rae, Kamasi Washingon, and Common. It also featured an impressive showing of Berklee-affiliated performers. We caught up with a few of these acts on the first day of the festival.

New Sales Tax Report Shows an Increase in Rate Changes in First Six Months of 2019
According to the bi-annual Tax Rate Report issued by Vertex Inc., a leading provider of tax technology and services, there were 335 standard sales tax rate changes in the first half of 2019, a 5% increase from the same period in 2018. In addition, the report shows there have been 6,230 new and changed standard sales and use tax rates over the past 10 years.
