Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has reintroduced a bill limiting foreign real estate investment near bases, as Army Times reported. The legislation stalled last year.
“Foreign adversaries are exploiting loopholes to acquire land near our military bases and training routes, jeopardizing the safety of our troops and the integrity of our operations,” Cruz said.
The bill would extend the authority of the inter-agency Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The committee can currently review transactions within a few miles of sensitive sites. Cruz’s bill would extend it to within 100 miles of bases and 50 miles of training ranges.
The USDA said firms linked to the Chinese government owned about 278,000 acres of farmland in the U.S. at the start of 2024, much of it near military installations, Army Times noted.
