Urgency for CCS in Australia

Delivering energy security while meeting future emissions reduction targets at the lowest economic cost is an immediate challenge to Australia. To tackle this trilemma, it is imperative that commercial scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is developed and available over the next 10 to 15 years to avoid ongoing disruption to energy security.

Tania Constable CEO of CO2CRC Limited said, “We would like to see ARENA and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation’s mandate open up to include a range of carbon reduction technologies including carbon capture and storage. We believe this is an efficient and cost-effective way to utilise the best of all technologies.

CCS is required beyond use in the power sector, as it will play a vital role in decarbonising energy intensive industries, which involve the continued use of fossil fuels.

CCS is not an experimental technology. It is being deployed or available now at commercial scale to:

  • provide a competitive, carbon reduction option for reliable 24-7 power from fossil fuels.
  • decarbonise a number of existing and prospective emissions-intensive industries including
  • natural gas and LNG production, iron and steel making, cement production, fertilisers, chemicals and textiles.

“Leadership in CCS could enable new industrial production in Australia and provide an opportunity to increase competitiveness and create jobs in high value adding sectors, while achieving emissions reduction targets”, said Dr Geoff Bongers of Gamma Energy Technology.

“The Australian Government currently has a range of energy security and climate change reviews planned or in progress and CCS must be one of the technologies considered in such reviews”, said Dr Bongers

As co-authors of this report, Gamma Energy Technology are proud to contribute to the ongoing discussions on energy in Australia as they seek to solve the trilemma of energy supply – to assure energy system security and affordability so that future emissions reductions targets are delivered.
