Wellington’s weather turned on a stunning autumn day for Lower Hutt tenant Yola who recently hosted her first garden party for some of her fellow tenants.
Yola in her garden
With the help of Emily and Mele from the Hutt Valley team, the 93 year-old and avid gardener, got the chance to share her love of flowers with others over a cuppa, scones and banana cake at her Epuni home.
Six tenants living nearby, who also have green thumbs, turned up to admire the dahlias and green beans amongst the myriad of flowers and plants scattered throughout Yola’s garden-beds. Since moving into her home a couple of years ago, Yola has transformed the section, beautifying it and making it a focal point in the street.
"I love the gardens as they make people happy. It’s been lovely being able to share it with others" says Yola.
Going by the connections made with other tenants, it may not be the last time Yola hosts her fellow tenants. She’s made new friends, with one tenant arranging to pick up Yola on Monday’s and take her to the Naenae Marare for Kaumatua, where people meet to sing and dance over morning tea, and no doubt talk about flowers.
