In January 2015, the new Bildwiedergabegeräte (DIN 6868-157) standard was made mandatory across Germany. Long overdue, the new standard takes effect from 1st May – this particular standard had not been updated in a decade, despite significant advances in technology and clinical practice during that time. The agreement of this new standard has also enabled Germany to align with existing international standards, such as the IEC62563-1.

What’s different?
The new standard describes the use cases for medical displays, i.e. the type of modality used to acquire the image used in primary diagnosis – such as mammography, standard CR and DR, fluoroscopy, CT as well as mobile systems (e.g. C-arms) and dental images – and also covers standards (room classes) for ambient light in the reading room.
Radiologists will benefit from more diagnostic confidence in their reading room, knowing they are using the right medical display for every study and working in optimum lighting conditions for every read they make: quality and consistency are at the heart of this new standard.
Ensuring consistent quality
Quality assurance and control are also at the heart of the new standard – including specifications for maximum and minimum luminance, and grayscale standards. Daily testing and measurement requirements ensure the on-going quality of the image and screen, giving radiologists total security in what they read.
Confidence in the reading room
The new DIN delivers a new level of diagnostic confidence so important for a radiologist – maintaining consistently high contrast levels and a higher dynamic range supports more effective reading, an increased ability to see subtle findings faster, and greater productivity. It also makes reading more ergonomically comfortable with less effort to discern visual differences.
Barco’s commitment to quality
All Barco’s medical displays conform with the new DIN 6868-157 standard, and QA and QC processes are built-in and automated, ensuring minimum demand on resource but maximum compliance and, importantly, highest quality standards.
