WHO: University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Outreach College

WHAT: Hosting the 2024 Asia Pacific Dance Festival featuring a four-day workshop, classes, field trips and performances that explore the legacy and lineages of hula. Participants will engage in workshops led by Kumu Hula (hula teachers) Maelia Loebenstein Carter and Kawaikapuokalani Hewett that will highlight cultural connections of hula foundations such as ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), mālama ʻāina (caring for land) and ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge). Workshops are open to the public and registration is still available.

WHEN: Monday, August 5–Saturday, August 10 

WHERE: UH Mānoa Hawaiʻinuiākea, various locations on campus and around Oʻahu ( register ), or livestream ( register to watch online ).

Workshop: Ke Kupu Ana O Ka Hula: Legacy, Lineage and the Caretakers of Hula

  • August 5: 9 a.m.–1 p.m., hula workshop 
  • August 6: Noon–4 p.m., field trip chronicling Kamehameha’s journey from Honolulu Harbor to the Pali
  • August 7: 9 a.m.–1 p.m., hula workshop
  • August 8: 9 a.m.–1 p.m., field trip to Bishop Museum
  • Plus evening events listed below.

Details:

  • Location: Hawai‘inuiākea at UH Mānoa or various campus locations
  • Limited seats available for transportation to field trip locations and evening events.
  • Open to all hula levels and lineages
  • Students are encouraged to participate in a performance on Saturday, August 10 with rehearsals on Friday and Saturday morning
  • Single day workshop pass: $60
  • Full week package: $175 (includes lunch, transportation, museum admission, talk story sessions and Saturday performance)
