Texas Tech University's Obesity Research Institute (ORI) hosts its sixth annual meeting and competition.
WHEN:
9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Wednesday (May 12)
WHERE:
Presented virtually via Zoom. The event is free but registration is required .
EVENT:
Presentations include:
- 9:20 a.m.: “Food and Hunger in a Warming World,” by Katharine Hayhoe , a Horn Distinguished Professor, Endowed Professor of Public Policy and Public Law in the Department of Political Science and co-director of the Texas Tech Climate Center . A Q&A session will follow, moderated by Naïma Moustaïd-Moussa , a Horn Distinguished Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and director of the ORI.
- 9:50 a.m.: “Health Disparities, Rural Communities, Outreach & Engaged Scholarship,” a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Glenn Cummins , a professor and associate dean for research and grants in the College of Media & Communication .
Topics include:- “ Garrison Institute on Aging and Project FRONTIER ,” by Dr. Volker Neugebauer, chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and executive director and chief scientific officer for the Garrison Institute on Aging; Annette Boles, the institute's director of community outreach and education; and Gabriela Ashworth, co-director of Project FRONTIER.
- “Family and Community Health Programs,” by Andrew Crocker, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
- “Health Disparities in Chronic Diseases,” by Duke Appiah , an assistant professor in the TTUHSC Julia Jones Matthews Department of Public Health and director of the Master of Public Health Program
- “ Outdoor Learning Environments (OLE!),” by Kristi Gaines , associate professor in the Texas Tech Department of Design
- 10:20 a.m.: “Opportunities with Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) and Programs for Underrepresented Minorities (URM),” a panel discussion moderated by Cristal Sanchez , program manager for the Office of Research Development & Communications , and Jessica Spott , director of the STEM Center for Outreach, Research & Education (STEM CORE).
Topics include:- “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, HSI and URM Initiatives,” by Ashley Gonzales, senior director of the Office of Institutional Diversity
- “National Science Foundation ADVANCE,” by Stephanie Jones , professor in the College of Education and coordinator for the Higher Education program
- “ Plains Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program ,” by Jaclyn Cañas-Carrell , a professor in the Department of Environmental Toxicology and interim vice provost for curriculum
- “HSI Awardees,” by Amy Boren-Alpízar , an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Education & Communications
- HSI Funding Opportunities, by Cristal Sanchez
The afternoon session will include new faculty presentations, a student and postdoctoral research competition and networking opportunities.
