The Obesity Society Recognizes Martin Binks, PhD, for Significant Contributions to Obesity Research and Treatment with the Atkinson-Stern Award for Distinguished Public Service

 

Silver Spring, MD – The Obesity Society (TOS) recently announced Martin Binks, PhD, FTOS, as the recipient of its 2014 Atkinson-Stern Award for Distinguished Public Service. This award, made possible by a gift from leading obesity researcher, Thomas A. Wadden, PhD, and in honor of Judith Stern, ScD, FTOS and Dick Atkinson, MD, recognizes Dr. Binks for his significant work to improve the lives of those affected by obesity through research, public policy and patient care.MartinBinks2

 

Dr. Binks is an Associate Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Texas Tech University where he leads the Behavioral Medicine and Translational Research Lab. He is a clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral medicine and obesity research, and acts as a respected public advocate for obesity research and access to evidence-based treatments.

 

"I believe that to solve the obesity issue we must let go of longstanding biases and unsuccessful tactics in favor of innovative, evidence-based approaches that fully integrate basic, clinical and population science to produce impactful interventions and policy decisions," says Dr. Binks.

 

During his career, Dr. Binks has been highly visible to the public and academic community as a frequent commentator on health issues, particularly obesity and related diseases. In his work as a clinician, scientist and educator, he has advocated for those affected by obesity within the professional, governmental and lay communities.

 

Dr. Binks is also known for his extensive involvement at TOS.

 

"There are very few individuals with a record of service to TOS that approach his contributions," says Steven Smith, MD, TOS President.

 

Each year TOS - the leading professional society dedicated to researching, treating and preventing obesity - announces the five esteemed recipients of its named awards to recognize the honorees for their scientific achievements and contributions to the basic science, treatment and prevention of obesity. "TOS developed this program more than a decade ago to promote, reward and encourage research in the field of obesity," says Dr. Smith. "I salute Dr. Binks for his significant contributions to TOS and his work to help improve the lives of those affected by obesity.

 

The award will be presented at the TOS Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, November 5, from 8:45-10:15 a.m. at ObesityWeekSM in Boston, MA. ObesityWeek is the premier annual scientific and educational conference for obesity professionals, and is the largest meeting of its kind dedicated to obesity research, treatment and prevention.
