FDA approves new treatment for a type of heart failure
Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Farxiga (dapagliflozin) oral tablets for adults with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure. Heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump enough blood to support the body’s needs, and this type of heart failure happens when the heart’s main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, is weakened.

FTC Imposes Conditions on AbbVie Inc.s Acquisition of Allergan plc
Following an extensive investigation, the FTC alleges that the proposed acquisition would likely result in substantial competitive harm to consumers in the market for treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI, a condition that results in the inability to digest food properly. The FTC also alleges that the acquisition would eliminate future direct competition between AbbVie and Allergan in the development and sales in the U.S. of IL-23 inhibitor drugs for treatment of moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease and moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis.

Governments are hoarding more than 100 million doses of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) while victims of COVID-19 are dying from lack of early treatment, which an increasing number of physicians and scientists believe is crucial for saving lives. AHA Statement: Pregnant women with CVD need specialized care before, during and postpartum
Women with cardiovascular disease should receive pre-pregnancy counseling and be monitored during and after pregnancy by either a cardio-obstetrics team or a multidisciplinary team of health care providers with experience in high-risk pregnancies. BioMarin Extends Gene Therapy Leadership with DiNAQOR in a Preclinical Collaboration and License Agreement to Develop Gene Therapies for Rare Genetic Cardiomyopathies

News digest cancer blood test, prostate cancer treatment, cancer risk and breast cancer radiotherapy
A blood test that looks for tumour DNA shed by cancer cells has been trialled for the first time in a group of 10,000 women who had no known cancer history. If the test revealed a positive result, the women would then be given further tests, and this process picked up 26 previously undetected cancers. But 101 women who had a positive test turned out not to have cancer. And 24 women who had a negative test were diagnosed with cancer through other screening programmes, revealing a need to improve the reliability of the test.
