SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 10, 2024)—The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) today announced the appointment of Cheryl Ewers as the museum’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO). A key position on the museum’s Executive Team, the CFO provides strategic oversight of the financial and business activities of SFMOMA, leading the work to achieve financial goals and long-term sustainability in support of the museum’s mission. As CFO, Ewers will actively collaborate with museum director Christopher Bedford and the museum’s Chief Operating Officer, Sheila Shin. Ewers will start her new role on January 14, 2025, and will take the place of Rebecca Malkin Chocron, who has been with SFMOMA for nearly six years and will stay on to ensure a smooth transition before relocating to her native France.

Ewers joins SFMOMA at a pivotal time, as the museum continues its steady recovery from the pandemic and launches an ambitious creative program that enhances community engagement. As CFO in this next chapter for the institution, Ewers will oversee the development of SFMOMA’s annual budget, the management of the institution’s investment portfolio and external reporting requirements, as well as develop and execute financial policies, conduct multiyear financial scenario planning and other forecasting efforts, and provide strategic leadership and mentorship to the Finance Department, among other responsibilities.

I am thrilled to welcome Cheryl Ewers, who comes to SFMOMA with extensive experience in nonprofit mission-driven organizations,” said Christopher Bedford, Helen and Charles Schwab Director of SFMOMA. “With her tremendous financial expertise, outstanding business acumen, and deep commitment to serving the community, Cheryl is an excellent addition to our team. I greatly look forward to our partnership and charting the course ahead for SFMOMA.”
