Singapore, 6 February 2024 – Singtel’s environmental leadership has been recognised with the top ‘A’ rating on global non-profit CDP’s Climate Change A List 2023, the first Southeast Asian telecommunications company to achieve this score.
Singtel’s rating was raised to “A”, from “A-“ in 2022 for its sustained environmental stewardship efforts including demonstrated emissions reductions and target setting, value chain engagement, and improved environmental disclosures. CDP’s environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely acknowledged as the gold standard for corporate environmental transparency, and it scrutinises more than 21,000 companies’ climate change practices, disclosures and targets worldwide to compile its index every year.
"We are honoured to be the first Southeast Asian telecommunications company to achieve CDP’s 'A' rating which affirms our longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship. "
Aileen Tan,
Singtel’s Group Chief People and Sustainability Officer
Ms Aileen Tan, Singtel’s Group Chief People and Sustainability Officer, said, “We are honoured to be the first Southeast Asian telecommunications company to achieve CDP’s ‘A’ rating which affirms our longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship. We have continued to build on our decarbonisation efforts, most recently refreshing our SBTi-approved targets to further reduce our carbon footprint, and moving up our net zero target to 2045, the only Asian telco to set such an ambitious goal ahead of 2050. These achievements are only possible with the support of our supply chain partners and regional associates, and we will continue to engage them closely to ensure a more liveable world for future generations.”
Ms Sherry Madera, Chief Executive Officer, CDP, said, “Earning a place on the A List is about more than the score. It’s an indication of high quality, complete data that equips companies with a holistic view of their environmental impact, serves as a baseline for transition plans and – crucially – enables them to follow through on their ambitions. As we move deeper into the Decade of Action, and as CDP continually raises the bar for what represents environmental leadership, the work of A List companies is never complete. We look forward to seeing all companies turn their commitments into further and more meaningful and effective action.”
Singtel’s environmental strategy focuses on reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency, and transitioning to the use of renewable energy sources. Singtel, the first telecoms company in Asia to have renewed targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aims to reduce its group-wide Scope 1 and 2 direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 55%, and Scope 3 third-party emissions by 40%, by 2030, using 2023 as the base year.
Since 2015, Singtel has invested S$150 million in various climate mitigation initiatives. These include backing up its electricity with renewable sources, upgrading its server chillers, facilitating e-waste recycling, and maximising the deployment of solar panels at its facilities across the island. It has also been optimising its network energy usage through AI and machine learning, and transitioning to an electric vehicle fleet. Singtel’s Comcentre headquarters will be Singapore’s first end-to-end carbon neutral development when redeveloped by 2028, and its upcoming data centre, DC Tuas, will be one of Singapore’s most efficient with a power usage effectiveness of 1.23 when operational in early 2026.
In addition to reducing its own emissions, Singtel is strengthening climate action across its ecosystem. It is engaging its supply chain partners to encourage them to strengthen their disclosures and step up their climate action, and supporting its regional associates’ decarbonisation initiatives to reduce the Group’s Scope 3 emissions. To enable informed decision-making for investors and lenders, Singtel published its inaugural standalone Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure report in 2022, one of a handful of progressive Singapore companies to do publish such a report.
Singtel was included for the first time on the CDP leader board in 2022 with an ‘A’ score in Supplier Engagement Rating and was the first Singapore-based company to join the CDP Supply Chain Programme, leveraging its purchasing power to effect positive change in its supply chain. Recently, Singtel was named Asia’s most sustainable telecom provider on the 2024 Corporate Knights Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World index, and ASEAN’s second most sustainable telecoms brand in Brand Finance’s ASEAN 300.
